AI Practice Setup · New Zealand Barristers
We configure AI tools on your own machine so routine correspondence, repeat paperwork, and practice admin start from a useful first draft instead of a blank page. Every output stays with you for review.
Less blank-page drafting
Routine correspondence, standard admin letters, and matter admin begin from your own approved templates — structured, consistent, ready for your review.
A safer way to work with AI
We build clear rules into your setup from day one. Approved workflows only. No guesswork about what the tool is doing with your files.
Already using AI?
If you're already experimenting, the value isn't introducing AI — it's making it barrister-specific, consistent, and operating within boundaries that protect you.
Plain Talk
This service is fixed-scope setup and training, not legal technology consulting, managed IT, or a promise to automate substantive legal work. We are frank about that from the first conversation.
The boundary matters. The Law Society is clear that barristers remain professionally responsible for every output. Our job is to make low-risk, repetitive admin move faster — not to do the lawyering.
"What I do: fixed-scope AI setup and training for barristers. What I do not do: legal advice, managed IT, hardware support, court-system integration, or unattended drafting of client work."
The Process
This isn't a consulting engagement without an end date. Every package has a defined scope, a delivery window, and a bedding-in period — then it's finished. No retainer required.
A practical check of your current machine, storage setup, existing tools, and the types of work you do most. We leave with a clear go/no-go view. If it's a good fit, you receive a fixed quote before anything further is committed.
No obligation · No feeFor practices with messier setups, existing AI use, or unclear risk boundaries, a paid Readiness Review comes first. It maps what's safe, what isn't, and produces a written one-page setup plan before any implementation begins.
Credited toward any packageWe configure the AI tools on your own hardware, build your approved workflows, create your prompt pack from your own precedents, and connect to your existing file structure. You don't move to new software. We come to where you are.
Remote or in-person, AucklandA structured training session on your actual setup — not a generic AI course. You receive a plain-English quick-reference guide specific to how your system works. Then a short bedding-in window for any minor refinements.
One or two sessions depending on packagePackages & Pricing
All prices NZD, excluding GST. You hold your own software licences — purchased directly. No markup.
Software licences are purchased directly by you from the relevant provider — not through us. Your ongoing AI tool cost is typically NZD $30–50/month. Readiness Review fee is credited in full if you proceed to any implementation package within 90 days.
The free 60-minute suitability call is exactly that — a practical check, not a sales pitch. If your setup isn't a good fit, we'll tell you plainly and you'll leave with a clear view of your options.
The Arithmetic
For a barrister billing at standard Auckland rates, recovering six hours per week of admin time generates far more than the cost of any setup package — in the first month alone. The question isn't whether this pays for itself. It's which tasks to start with.
Honest Expectations
The barristers we work with are experienced, precise, and have no patience for overselling. Neither do we. These are the things we say upfront.
The Law Society has made this explicit: using AI tools does not transfer responsibility. Every draft produced by an AI tool must be reviewed by you before it is used. We build your setup to make that review process easy, not to bypass it.
Initial setups are limited to approved, lower-risk administrative workflows. Anything involving privileged communications, confidential client advice, or sensitive personal information requires a separate written review and may be unsuitable. We won't pressure you to expand the boundary.
Conversations with AI tools process through external servers. We're transparent about how data flows in your specific setup, flag where caution is warranted, and will recommend alternative tools where a particular workflow creates exposure you're not comfortable with.
AI tool pricing and features shift quickly. We stay current and maintain competence across multiple platforms, so if one changes significantly, your setup isn't left stranded. We don't lock you into any single vendor.
Each package has a defined scope and a bedding-in window for minor fixes. After that, the engagement is complete. There is no open-ended helpdesk, managed IT service, or monthly retainer unless you specifically want one.
Common Questions
No. Each package is fixed-scope. There's a short bedding-in window for minor fixes, but this is not a managed IT or ongoing helpdesk engagement. If you want periodic optimisation, we can discuss a separate arrangement at the time.
Because using AI occasionally is not the same as having a repeatable, safe, barrister-specific setup. Ad hoc prompting produces inconsistent results and creates boundary risks. We build something you can rely on, with rules that protect you.
Not by default. Initial setups are limited to approved lower-risk workflows. Anything involving privileged or sensitive material needs a separate written review before we'd consider it — and it may simply be unsuitable.
No. You provide the machine. If your current hardware isn't suitable, we'll give you a written specification or coordinate with your existing IT supplier for a once-off fee. The purchase, warranty, and ongoing support remain with you and your supplier.
Typically NZD $30–50 per month, purchased directly by you from the provider. We do not mark up software or take commissions. You hold your own licence and are free to cancel it independently of our engagement.
That's exactly what the free 60-minute suitability call is for. We check your machine, storage, current workflow, and risk position. If it's not a good fit, we'll say so. No pressure, no invoice.
